Every year the whole world celebrates the contribution and hard work of laborers on the 1st day of May. It is known as International Labour Day. In some countries, it is named workers’ day.

Along with the world, Bangladesh also celebrates this day to pay homage to their laborers. World labor day has its own authentic history in humankind. It wasn’t easy to fight for the right. After all this year of Labourer’s right movement, is Bangladesh treating their laborers fairly?

– How Do Different Countries Celebrate International Labour Day?

International Labour Day is celebrated in various ways around the world. In Pakistan, Labor Day 2024 is marked with parades, rallies, and speeches to honor the contributions of workers. It is a day to recognize the rights and achievements of laborers and promote better working conditions.

History of Labour Day

May 1st day symbolizes and memorizes the Haymarket Affair, which took place in Chicago, the United States in the year 1886. In those days US laborers were forced to work from 15 hours to 16 hours a day within a very dangerous conditions.

The Federation of Organized Trades and Labour Union of the United States decided to do their work for 8 hours a day from the 1st day of May 1886. On that day 300,000 to 500’000 went on a strike across the country. Chicago was the main place for this strike and on the 3rd day of the strike due to inconvenience police officers opened fire and ended up killing at least two strikers.

On the 4th of May, there was a bomb blast causing the death of 7 police officers and 4 civilians. Police then arrested everyone behind the idea of the strike and the court sentenced death to them. 4 were hanged, one committed suicide, and two had their life in prison. 

After that, in 1889 the international organization for workers ‘Second International’ announced that May 1 would be the international workers’ day. This incident was famous all over the world. So from then, the whole world started to celebrate the 1st day of May as International Labour Day.

Labour Day In Bangladesh

Bangladesh celebrates Labour day with honor and dignity. Workers take preparation to celebrate this day across the country with rallies, seminars, discussions, and cultural programs. It is a national holiday. 

Newspapers print special news on this day. Broadcasting media on-air particular programs to this day. Political parties organize their own rallies and seminars. The President and prime minister of Bangladesh express their good wishes through messages. 

Many cultural events take place in honor of our laborers. Many laborer party celebrities this day as expectedly like the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Workers Party, Sramik league, Gono Forum, etc.

Apart from Celebration: Is Bangladesh Treating Their Labourers Fairly?

The International Trade Union Confederation(ITUC) has categorized Bangladesh in the midst of the 10 worst countries, where there is no assurance of labor rights in the workplace. The study suggested that workers work in poor conditions in Bangladesh. While there is no assurance of basic laborer rights.

Along with poor conditions in the workplace, Bangladesh has a very bad reputation for child laborers in their country. Unsafe labor and child labor have so many reasons behind this. Most importantly capitalism is the fact behind it. Bangladesh has been very weak to eradicate this problem around the country.

Every year on Labour Day, leaders talk about this problem in seminars or discussions. But solutions are way away from execution. Still, Bangladesh is fighting over this issue. Workers are really looking forward to it if the government can come to an end about this or not.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina said in her message on Labour Day, “Imbued with the spirit of the holy May Day, the workers and owners should devote themselves to increasing national production by maintaining good relations.”

On the same occasion President Abdul Hamid also issued a message, he mainly said to produce world-class products workers and owners must have a good relationship. It should be done to cope with the world economy market in this competitive globalized world.

Significance of Labour Day

Labour day implicates the owner worker relations, and how labor should be treated. As a result of the Haymarket protest, the daily working hours of the workers are reduced from 16 hours to 8 hours. Labor around the world has been served with fair rights.

As a result, class inequality in society gradually began to disappear. Billions of workers have been freed from the aggressive sting of illegal greedy people who capitalize on the weak points of capitalism.
